The Retention Election bills, HF1083 and SF1082, would amend the Minnesota Constitution to eliminate contested judicial elections. Voters would only have the opportunity to remove a judge. A Merit Selection commission composed of 24 members would review and select which people would be considered to become a Judge. The Governor would have the power to choose new Judges and appoint them to office.
For more than 150 years, the Minnesota Constitution has given the people the right to hold the courts accountable through contested elections of judges instead of using appointments by the Governor, as some other states have.
Dan Griffith practices law in International Falls and was an assistant City and County Attorney. As a Republican-endorsed candidate for Minnesota Court of Appeals in 2010, he garnered 48.5% of the vote. I look forward to seeing you on November 23rd.
